Introduction Supervised Digital Output (SDO) modules are designed for critical control programs where outputs may remain in a single state for extended periods. These modules receive output signals from the Main Processors across three channels, which are then voted on by a fault-tolerant quadruplicated output switch. This switch passes a single voted output signal to the field termination.
SDO modules incorporate voltage and current loopback circuitry with online diagnostics to verify the operation of each output switch, the field circuit, and the presence of a load, ensuring complete fault coverage without influencing the output signal. They detect various field faults, including power loss, open or missing loads, field shorts, and shorted loads in the de-energized state. Fault detection triggers appropriate alarms, and these modules support hot-spare capability. An external termination panel (ETP) is required for these modules.
